In the first month of pregnancy, the fertilised egg starts dividing into different cells while traveling to the uterus through the fallopian tube.
In the second month at the 5 week mark, the embryo is the size of a grain of rice and is visible to the naked eye. The brain and spinal cord are beginning to develop. At 6 weeks, the embryo has a head, ears, eyes, a beating heart with two chambers, small buds that will form into arms and legs and a spine growing into what looks like a tail. At 7 weeks, the small buds have developed into arms and legs and nostrils are visible on the face. At 8 weeks, the embryo is at 2 centimeters, fingers, toes, and blood vessels are visible.
In the third month, what is known as the embryonic stage is complete, and the fetal stage begins. There is rapid growing during this month, and the body is fully formed, including fingernails. The eyes remain closed.
By the fourth month, the fetus is sucking its thumb, and it is covered by fine hair called lanugo. Its face has a more human appearance, and you may begin to feel first kicks and movements.
In the fifth month, the rapid growing becomes slower. The fetus is around 18 centimeters and the legs are in proportion with the body. Fingernails are fully developed and faint eyebrows appear. At this stage, there will be a lot of movement of the baby- especially when lying down.
By the sixth month, all the baby’s organs are fully developed and its face is one of a newborn. The skin is wrinkled, red and thin with little underlying fat and covered in a substance called vernix. This protects the baby while floating in the uterus. The baby’s hearing is also well developed by this stage, and it will respond to noise.
In the seventh month, lanugo hair has almost gone completely and there is hair on the head. Also, fat is being deposited under the skin.
By the eighth month, the baby has become plumper, and toenails and fingernails are present and fully grown. The baby’s eyes are open when the baby is awake. At around 32 weeks, the baby will be in a downwards position without any room for movement.
In the ninth month of development, the baby’s head will be on top of the cervix. The lanugo hair is mostly gone, besides from the forehead.
At full term, the baby has all its organs and body systems. It is ready for being born.
